Birdwatching Tips
Do’s and Don’ts of Birding in the Field
1. BE PATIENT
Good things come to those who wait! Stay still, let the birds come to
you.
2. MOVE QUIETLY
Be light on your feet and speak softly. Sudden sounds can scare birds
away.
3. BLEND IN
Wear soft, natural colours and avoid bright clothes that stand out in
the greenery.
4. KEEP YOUR DISTANCE
Watch from afar and you’ll see more natural behaviour.
5. GO EARLY OR LATE
Sunrise and Sunset are when birds are most active and the air is full of
song.
6. LOOK AND LISTEN
Use both your eyes and ears; sometimes you’ll hear a bird before you see
it!
7. CARRY BINOCULARS
Spot birds up close, without getting too close
8. DON'T USE A FLASH
Bright flashes startle birds, capture them in natural light with the
shutter sound off!
9. BE CURIOUS
Rare visitor or everyday sparrow; each bird has its own charm and story.
10. LEAVE NO TRACE
Take back what you bring; litter and food scraps don’t belong in the
wild.
11. RESPECT
Never touch nests, eggs or chicks
